- Introduction
Access to quality healthcare and regular health screening remains a critical challenge for children in underserved urban slum communities. To address this gap, Index Hospital, in active collaboration with the Society for Awareness and Transformation of Youthful Aspirations (SATYA), organized a Comprehensive Free Medical Health Checkup Camp specifically tailored for school-going children in Vidur Nagar.
SATYA played a pivotal role as the community mobilization and coordination partner, bringing 125 Adivasi children from Vidur Nagar to the camp site. The initiative aimed to identify early health issues, evaluate nutritional status, and promote preventive hygiene habits among children who otherwise lack regular access to specialized medical consultation - Health Camp Services
The medical team from Index Hospital comprised pediatricians, general physicians, dentists, ophthalmologists, and nursing staff. The camp provided an array of essential medical checks and preventive services:
• General Physical Health & Growth Assessment: Complete clinical examination including monitoring height, weight, BMI, and checking for signs of anemia or malnutrition.
• Dental Screening: Assessment of oral hygiene, identification of cavities, dental caries, and guidance on proper brushing techniques.
• BMI: Overall physical health screening by examining body mass index. - Beneficiaries
The primary beneficiaries of this camp were 125 Adivasi children residing in Vidur Nagar.
Metric Profile Details
Total Children Attended 125 Adivasi Children
Demographic Group Primary and Secondary School-age Children
Key Findings High prevalence of mild-to-moderate anemia, dental caries and underweight BMI metrics.
Immediate Interventions Free vitamin/iron supplements distributed; 12 children referred for specialized follow-up care.
SATYA volunteers facilitated smooth registration, maintained organized queues, and assisted non-fluent children during doctor examinations to ensure a child-friendly environment throughout the day.
- Challenges
Organizing a large-scale health drive in an informal settlement presented several operational challenges:
• Community Hesitancy & Fear: Initial reluctance among some parents regarding medical checks and medication was overcome through door-to-door visits by SATYA volunteers prior to the event.
• Document & History Retrieval: Lack of prior medical histories or official age/birth records required doctors to rely entirely on on-spot physical assessments.
• Follow-Up Care Logistics: Arranging secondary and tertiary care for children identified with specialized conditions (e.g., advanced dental issues or vision correction) requires sustained tracking and resources. - Future Plans
To build upon the outcome of this health drive, SATYA and Index Hospital plan to implement the following follow-up measures:
• Follow-Up Medical Tracker: SATYA volunteers will maintain individual health cards for the 125 children to monitor their health progress and ensure compliance with prescribed supplements.
• Specialized Referral Support: Coordinate with Index Hospital to facilitate free or subsidized secondary consultations for children flagged for advanced treatment during the camp.
• Routine Nutrition Drives: Organize bi-monthly nutritional awareness drives and supplementary meal distribution sessions in Vidur Nagar.
• Regular Health Screening: Establish a semi-annual health checkup schedule with Index Hospital to continuously monitor the physical development of children in the community. - Conclusion
The collaborative health checkup camp organized by Index Hospital with active participation from SATYA successfully addressed the immediate healthcare needs of 125 Adivasi children in Vidur Nagar. Beyond basic diagnostics and free medicine distribution, the event served as a step toward fostering health awareness within marginalized urban families. SATYA remains committed to bridging healthcare gaps and building long-term health resilience among youth and children across communities.
